Isolate Machinery before Maintenance

The importance of isolating machinery before carrying out repairs and maintenance has been highlighted by a number of recent workplace incidents.

In two separate incidents this led to the death of a worker and an employee losing part of their arm.

In the case of the death, the HSE investigation found that the company failed to ensure the machine was properly isolated before work was carried out. This resulted in the machine becoming live and the maintenance worker being killed as a result.

It is vital that any work equipment or machinery is properly switched off and isolated, with checks carried out before any routine maintenance or repairs are carried out.

Here at VARTAN we carry out bespoke Risk Assessments on work equipment and machinery to identify potential hazards, and to minimise the chances of horrific incidents like this occurring in the workplace.
